Judge to preside over hearing concerning possible treasurer's vacancy

Judge Theodore A. Metry will preside over any future hearings concerning a possible vacancy created in the City treasurer's position, City Council Chairman Tim Woolley said during the March 19 City Council meeting.

Judge Metry presides over the Grosse Pointe Woods Municipal Court. Chairman Woolley said Metry would not only preside over any hearings, but would work with City of Taylor corporation counsel and Treasurer Edward Bourassa's attorney, Michael Pitt, to set up dates and times of hearings concerning the matter.

City Council is alleges that the treasurer has "vacated" his position. By a 5-2 vote in mid-December, the council voted to stop paying the treasurer's salary, starting January 1, 2019, pending an investigation of the situation. The results of that investigation were forwarded to the treasurer and a public hearing was held on March 5. Treasurer Bourassa and Pitts appeared before council at that time. The treasurer did not speak or answer questions; Pitts read a statement and requested that Bourassa's pay be reinstated.

Bourassa has filed a lawsuit against the five council members (Alex Garza, Woolley, Angela Croft, Dan Bzura and Butch Ramik) who voted to halt his pay, and Mayor Rick Sollars. Garza, then council chairman, resigned as of January 1. He is now a state representative.

Bourassa, who underwent surgery early in 2018, contends that he has been working from home.

No dates or times have been set up for further hearings on the matter. When they are, they will be posted at www.cityoftaylor.com.
